I have a recently rebuilt '63 N'head w/o ac and am having cooling problems when the air temp exceeds 85-90.  I have recored the rad (3 cores), installed a new water pump, checked the thermo, and recently installed a shroud.  The only thing I can think of now is that the water pump is not pumping the volume it should.  There is an option for a 5 blade and a 3 blade pump for this car ('63 Wildcat).  Two questions:
-Do you think the 3 blade or the 5 blade creates more flow? (I think I have the 5 blade but have access to the 3 blade also), and
-Would a rebuild by you create greater flow?

Thanks for your help / Mike

Mike,

It's a bit hard to tell what's up when you rebuild the engine and alter the cooling system at the same time.

Often the issue is improper ignition timing.....not enough advance will cause high exhaust temps and subsequent high coolant temps.

Not sure on the Nail Head water pumps. The rebuilder could have screwed it up.

I have NEVER seen too much coolant flow cause a engine with a pressurized cooling system to run hot. This is an issue with flat head Fords with non-pressurized systems that has become a Hot Rodders Myth.
