I have the original water pump for a 1958 Corvette I'm restoring (it's not THE original water pump, but all of the numbers are correct).

Can you modify the pump for higher flow when you restore it?

The OEM pumps flow as much or more coolant as the aftermarket "high flow" pumps. Even the Edelbrock pumps don't flow more coolant than the stock GM pumps.

However, most pumps have been rebuilt at least once. Rebuilders usually install a new impeller rather than machine the original to accept the newer cartridge seals. The replacement impeller is not up to OEM specs and they often don't properly set the clearance to OEM spec between the impeller and the casting.

When we restore a water pump we take the necessary steps to assure OEM performance....which is usually better than the "High Flow" pumps offered by companies from California to China.
